IAR Systems, a global provider of embedded development software tools and services, announced that its embedded software development tool, IAR Embedded Workbench, is being used by South Korea's Osong Medical Innovation Foundation (KBIO Health) to develop cutting-edge medical devices and accelerate the development of smart medical platforms. The Osong Medical Innovation Foundation (KBIO Health) is a public institution under the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, which aims to create a core support infrastructure for the development of world-class new drugs and advanced medical equipment, to revitalize medical research and development, and to promote research results. Major research institutes such as KBIO Health Advanced Medical Device Development Support Center, New Drug Development Support Center, Non-Clinical Support Center, and Advanced Medical Device Development Support Center use IAR Embedded Workbench to improve the performance of various smart medical devices.

Recently, the demand for smart medical devices that support medical functions is on the rise. In the development process of devices such as smart watches, smart patches or smart bracelets, functional realization has become the core. However, the key issue is to reduce device inconvenience, increase battery life to maximize working time, shorten development cycle, and speed up product release. IAR Embedded Workbench provides solutions to these challenges.

"IAR Embedded Workbench is one of the development tools of choice for medical device developers worldwide, optimized for developing versatile and reliable embedded systems," said Lee Hyundo, IAR Systems Korea Sales Manager. Osong Medical Innovation Foundation Advanced Medical Devices Sung-Jun Hong, Ph.D., Optical Applications Team, Development Support Center, explained: "Thanks to high-quality optimization techniques that reduce hardware requirements by eliminating the need for additional memory banks, IAR Embedded Workbench can shrink the code of embedded software for smart medical devices. volume."

At the same time, reducing the size of software code can also speed up the development process. In general, the larger the code size, plus code additions and modifications, the longer it takes to build the software. "IAR Embedded Workbench is at least twice as fast at building code of a similar size compared to free tools from device manufacturers that I've used in other development projects," said Dr. Sung-Jun Hong.

In addition, IAR Embedded Workbench also played an important role in the power minimization design of the "KBIO-eBAND" smart bracelet developed by the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation. Dr. Sung-Jun Hong pointed out, "Even if the hardware is designed as low power consumption as possible, the current consumption of the device can still become very large due to the operation of the software. However, with the power debug function and I-jet debugger provided by IAR Systems, We were able to optimize the design by monitoring changes in current consumption caused by source code behavior, and now the KBIO-eBAND's software uses the least amount of current."

The Osong Medical Innovation Foundation plans to further expand its collaboration with IAR Systems in future projects to develop advanced medical devices such as smart bracelets. According to Dr. Sung-Jun Hong, several project plans are currently under review, including plans to introduce support functions to improve code quality, such as C-STAT; and plans to upgrade IAR Embedded Workbench to a functional safety version and complete IEC 62304 certification , in preparation for enhanced certification of medical devices.

Lee Hyundo, IAR Systems Korea Sales Manager, said: "We are very pleased that IAR Systems' various embedded software development tools have been adopted by the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation to facilitate the design and development of innovative smart medical devices. We are also committed to continuing to provide more comprehensive support. , to help the Advanced Medical Device Development Support Center achieve more innovative results."
