Boreas Technologies' BOS1901 is a single-chip piezoelectric actuator drive with energy recovery capabilities based on a patent-pending CapDrive technology. It can drive drivers with waveforms up to 190 V(pk-pk) while operating at supply voltages from 3 V to 5.5 V. The input digital stream is written inside the FIFO through a digital interface to generate the desired output waveform. The low power consumption and small size make it suitable for a variety of applications where power consumption and heat dissipation need to be minimized.

Simplified schematic

BOS1901 uses a high-speed SPI on its digital front end. It enables devices to share the common communication bus of multi-actuator systems and users can query various data such as actuator voltage for sensing applications. Differential drivers achieve low distortion waveforms and quiet actuator operation. All Settings are adjustable through a digital front end to reduce BOM. Only seven passive discrete components are required. The BOS1901 can work with a variety of commercial off-the-shelf inductors.

The BOS1901 has unidirectional power input (UPI) among systems that cannot handle reverse currents in a power transmission network. When UPI mode is activated, the driver behaves as a resistive load without reducing power efficiency. Typical boot times of less than 300 μs on most systems make BOS1901 delays irrelevant. The safety system protects the equipment from damage in the event of failure
